Standing Up for Yourself

We have been working on being assertive and standing up for ourselves as our next social skill.  We read the book Shubert and his Big Voice.  Shubert shows how he learns to stand up assertively, effectively, and respectfully to bullies.  Each child must learn to use his or her BIG voice (stern and serious voice) in tough situations.

Some examples:
On the playground- If someone is clogging the slide, one needs to use a stern voice and tell them "I do not like it when you clog the slide!  I feel scared when you do that!"

In the classroom- If someone is not letting you play, you need to say "I do not like it when you do not let me play and I feel sad!"  If someone is bothering you, you need to say "I do not like it when you ___.  Please stop!"

In the lunch room- If someone is showing chewed food in their mouth, one needs to use a stern voice and tell them "I do not want to see food in your mouth!  That is disgusting."
